How it works

Start with provisional income: your other income, plus tax-exempt interest, plus half of your benefits. Below $25,000 single or $32,000 joint, none of the benefits are taxable.

Between those amounts and $34,000 single or $44,000 joint, up to 50% is taxable. Above them, up to 85%. The thresholds are written into law and have never been indexed for inflation.

Questions

Did the 2025 tax law end tax on Social Security?

No. It added a deduction of up to $6,000 per person 65 or older from 2025 through 2028, which lowers the tax for many retirees, but benefits are still taxable under the same rules.

Does my state tax Social Security?

Most don't. In 2026, Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah and Vermont can tax some benefits, usually with income-based exemptions.
