How it works
Fat FIRE uses the same math with a larger budget, often $100,000 a year or more. At $150,000 and 4%, the target is $3.75 million.
At this size, taxes matter. Withdrawals from traditional accounts are taxed as income, so the gross amount you need is larger than your spending.
Questions
Is 4% too high for an early retirement?
For 40 to 50 years, 3.25% to 3.5% is common. Try a lower rate to see the effect.
How do I lower the tax?
Mix withdrawals from taxable, Roth and traditional accounts, and use low-income years for Roth conversions.
