How it works
Your FIRE number is your yearly spending divided by your withdrawal rate: 25 times spending at 4%. The calculator grows what you have and what you add each year at a real return, so the answer is in today's dollars.
Your savings rate matters more than your return. Spending less shrinks the target and raises the amount you save at the same time.
Questions
What real return should I assume?
5% real is common for a stock-heavy portfolio; 3% to 4% is more cautious.
Should spending include taxes?
Yes, include tax on withdrawals. With mostly traditional accounts that's often 10% to 15% of spending.
