How it works

Each year the calculator takes the withdrawal, grows what's left at your return, and raises next year's withdrawal by inflation. The money runs out when the balance hits zero.

What matters most is the real return, your return minus inflation. A 5% return with 2.5% inflation behaves like about 2.4% growth in today's dollars.

2026 figures: IRS Publication 590-B, Appendix B; IRS Rev. Rul. 2026-19 (October 2026 AFRs); IRS Notice 2022-6 (72(t) payments).

Questions

Should the withdrawal include taxes?

Yes. Withdrawals from traditional accounts are taxable, so the amount you take needs to cover the tax as well as your spending.

What withdrawal is sustainable for 30 years?

At a 3% real return, about 5% a year spends a portfolio down to zero in 30 years. The 4% rule leaves a margin for bad markets.
