Pay the tax from outside the IRA if you can. Paying it from the conversion shrinks what lands in the Roth, and under 59½ the withheld part counts as an early withdrawal.
How it works
The tax on a conversion is the difference between your tax with it and without it. That is often higher than your bracket suggests, because extra income can make up to 85% of your Social Security taxable and push qualified dividends into the 15% range.
Choose your state to add state income tax. Illinois exempts conversions entirely, and Pennsylvania and Mississippi exempt them once you are retired and past 59½; the calculator applies those rules for anyone 65 or older on the return.
2026 figures: IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (2026 inflation adjustments); IRS Notice 2025-67 (2026 retirement plan limits); CMS 2026 Medicare Parts A & B premiums and deductibles.
Questions
Should I withhold the tax from the conversion?
It's better to pay from other savings. Tax withheld from the conversion never reaches the Roth, and under 59½ it counts as an early withdrawal.
When is the tax due?
With your 2026 return, but large conversions can trigger underpayment penalties. Make an estimated payment in the quarter you convert, or raise withholding.
