2026 rules

Work out your biweekly payment on a TSP loan and what it costs you in lost growth.

Payment each biweekly paycheck$171.93

  1. Loan amount$20,000
  2. Payments130 biweekly over 5 years
  3. Interest you pay (back into your account)$2,352
  4. Loan fee$50
  5. Growth you may give up vs staying invested$1,841

Leaving federal service makes the balance due. Anything not repaid becomes a taxable distribution, plus 10% if you are under 59½ (55 if you separated that year or later).

How it works

You can borrow $1,000 to $50,000 from your own contributions and earnings. General-purpose loans run one to five years, residential loans up to fifteen. The rate is the G Fund rate when you apply, and there is a $50 fee.

Interest goes back into your account, but the borrowed money earns only that rate instead of what your funds return.
